Functionalists believe being married involves only being in a controlled sexual relationship with one individual. This prevents adultery, promiscuity and illegitimate children.

The nuclear family is not tied down to one area by any kinship obligations and can move to different towns for work. This means the isolated nuclear family fit into modern industrial society.

Women perform the essential role of expression in that they provide care and affection for family members. This allows the family to be loving and warm with a strong, emotional bond.
