Where is the cerebellum located?
Behind the top part of the brain stem and is made of 2 hemispheres.
1 of 10
What does the cerebellum do?
Receives info from sensory systems, spinal cord and regulated motor movements.
2 of 10
What doesn't it do?
Does not initiated movement
3 of 10
What does the cerebellum do when involved with movement?
Maintains posture, coordinated head, eye, arm movements, fine-tunes precision movements and facilitates motor learning.
4 of 10
What percentage of neurones are there?
More than 50% of total neurones in the brain are packed into 10% of total brain volume.
5 of 10
What does the cerebellum consist of?
Massive amount of organised, dense and highly aborised, interconnected Purkinje fibres.
6 of 10
What are purkinje fibres?
Neurones that have numerous branching dendrites and long axon to regulate and coordinated motor movements.
7 of 10
What does lesions to this area of the brain cause?
disruption of precise movements resulting in ataxia and intention tremor.
8 of 10
What does ethanol do?
Disrupts signalling in complex cerebellar networks leading to uncoordinated movements.
9 of 10
What does loss or damage to purkinje cells result in?
Gives rise to neurological disease such as Niemann Pick disease type C.
