What is the brain stem divided into?
Medulla, pons, midbrain
1 of 10
What is the brainstem?
Connects teh spinal cord and controls flow of signals between brain and rest of body.
2 of 10
What does damage to the brainstem result in?
Most likely death as it plays a role in autonomic (involuntary) functions
3 of 10
What is the function of the brainstem?
Sensation and motor control of the head, neck and face including facial muscles, tongue, pharynx and larynx.
4 of 10
How many cranial nerves output to muscles of the head?
12 cranial nerves which are located in the brainstem.
5 of 10
What are the specialised neurones in the brainstem for?
For parasympatheic reflexes, cardiac output, blood pressure, gut peristalsis, constriction of pupils.
6 of 10
What is the reticular formation and its role?
network of neurones in the brain stem that recieve incoming sensory info and regulate alertness and arousal.
7 of 10
What does the medulla do?
Point at which the brainstem connects to spinal cord. It contains the cardiac, respiratory, vomiting and vasomotor centres and regulated autonomic functions.
8 of 10
What is the role of the midbrain?
Associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep and wake cycles.
9 of 10
What is the role of the pons?
Relays motor info between cortex and cerebellum. Involved in sleep, taste and respiration.
