What is event sampling?
Recording the frequency of specific behaviour every time it occurs, if it is relevant to the predetermined behavioural categories
1 of 10
What is time sampling?
The researcher decides in advance to note down or record behaviour at certain times; e.g. in 1 minute intervals
2 of 10
How is the mean calculated?
The mean, or average, is calculated by adding up the scores and dividing the total by the number of scores.
3 of 10
How is the mode calculated?
Numbers should be arranged in numerical order (smallest value to largest) and the most frequently occurring represents the mode
4 of 10
How is the median calculated?
Numerous should be arranged in numerical order (smallest value to largest) and the middle value represents the median
5 of 10
Evaluate the use of the mean
The mean utilizes all numbers in a set to express the measure of central tendency; however, outliers can artificially inflate or deflate the mean value and distort it
6 of 10
Evaluate the use of the median
The median gets rid of disproportionately high or low scores, but it may not adequately represent the full set of numbers.
7 of 10
Evaluate the use of the mode
The mode may be less influenced by outliers and is good at representing what is "typical" for a given group of numbers, but may be useless in cases where no number occur more than once.
8 of 10
Explain what is meant by inter-rater reliability
Inter-rater reliability is where different observers interpret and record behaviour in the same way, or, the same observer interprets and records behaviour in the same way on two different occasions. It involves training observers in the use of the c
9 of 10
Suggest how the researcher could ensure that this observation has inter-rater reliability
All those responsible for observing should meet and practice using the behavioural categories that have been devised so that they all try and record behaviour in the same way. For example, decide what should be included for each behavioural category
