Empirical Theory
Because of our experience with objects, we can recognise human-designed ones. But in order to point to a designed universe, we would need to have an experience of a range of different universes. As we only experience one, the analogy cannot be applied
1 of 6
Teleological Argument
(Socrates) argued that the adaptation of human parts to one another, such as the eyelids protecting the eyeballs, could not have been due to chance and was a sign of wise planning in the universe.
2 of 6
Anthropic Principle
(Tennant) Evidence of design=the way the universe supports intelligent life. Nothing seen in Darwins theory can explain why humans feel a love and appreciation of art etc as we do not need them for survival so they must have been inputted by God
3 of 6
Fine Tuning argument
(Swinburne) Earth is too finely tuned to be like this on its own.Science can explain why the laws of physics work well together, but it CAN'T explain WHY all these "occurneces" have coordinated themselves intime to work in our favour
4 of 6
Watch Analogy
(Paley) Imagine a man walking across a heath, comes across a stone and a watch.the stone(purposeless) could have been there forever however the watch in all it's intricacy and purpose( to tell the time) must have been designed
5 of 6
Design Argument
(Aquinas) For an arrow to reach its destination it must be directed by an archer, in the same way natural bodies seem to act in a regular fashion to reach a specific purpose as they like the arrow aren't able to direct themselves, so it must be God
