What are finite resources?
Finite resources are no longer being made as conditions on Earth are no longer the same again.
1 of 12
Why do we crack large hydrocarbons?
To meet the demand of small, more useful hydrocarbons (such as petrol).
2 of 12
What environmental problems are caused by the exploitation of crude oil?
Oil slicks near beaches can occur, which then harms wildlife. A counter-productive method of cleaning up is to use detergents, though this consequently harms wildlife.
3 of 12
How does politics affect the availability of crude oil?
If you are purchasing crude oil from a politically unstable country this can cause a long-term dependency for oil and gas, therefore instigating future supply issues.
4 of 12
What are fossil fuels?
Fossil fuels include coal, oil and natural gas, which were formed millions of years ago from the remains of dead organisms.
5 of 12
What is the general formula for alkanes?
2n + 2 (n being the number of carbon atoms)
6 of 12
What properties do small hydrocarbons have?
They are volatile, flow and ignite easily and have a low boiling point.
7 of 12
Why do large hydrocarbons have a higher boiling point?
As large hydrocarbons have more weak intermolecular forces between them, they require more thermal energy to separate them.
8 of 12
What conflict is there between petrochemicals and fuels?
Petrochemicals can be developed into necessary items, for instance life-saving medicines, whilst fuels are simply burnt to provide energy, which could be acquired from other sources.
9 of 12
What happens in distillation?
A liquid is evaporated and then condensed.
10 of 12
What can we use to test for an alkane or alkene?
Bromine water can be used as an indicator of alkanes or alkenes, as it becomes colourless in the presence of an alkene.
11 of 12
Why can we fractionally distillate crude oil?
Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, all of which have different boiling points, hence making it ideal for distillation.
