Fractional Distillation
Heat the crude oil until most of if vapourises. The hydrocarbons rise up the tower (hot at bottom, cool at top). Hydrocarbons rise up tower until they reach their condensation point (when cool enough). Therefore hydrocarbons collect @ diff. points

Cracking
Separates long chain hydrocarbons into shorter chain hydrocarbons to meet their demand. We use AlO or 'hot broken pot' as a catalyst for the reaction, and high temp. The reaction is a thermal decomposition.

Testing for an Alkene
Use bromine water. The alkene reacts w/ the bromine, and the Br adds to the carbon atoms either side of the double bond-the double bond breaks, so final product is saturated. Alkenes= orange to colourless, alkanes= remain orange.

Complete Combustion
Good oxygen supply. Water and carbon dioxide form.

Lack of oxygen. Carbon monoxide and water form. CO poisonous because it binds to haemoglobin in RBCs and decreases their capacity to carry oxygen.
