Protecting the general public from the criminal - for example, putting an arsonist in prison.

Helping the criminal to change from their old ways - for example, teaching a thief legal ways to earn money.

Deterrence
Putting future criminals off of committing a crime, and preventing reoffenders - for example, a fine for speeding.

The criminal must be punished in order for the law to be respected - this covers all types of punishment.
