When does friction occur?
An object moves through a medium e.g. air or water or surfaces slide past each other.
1 of 8
How does fricition work?
It works against an object in the opposite direction to which it is moving; resistive force.
2 of 8
What is friction?
A force.
3 of 8
What does the stopping distance depend on?
The thinking distance and the breaking distance.
4 of 8
What is the thinking distance?
The thinking distance is the distance travelled during the drivers reaction times.
5 of 8
What is the breaking distance?
The breaking distance is the distance travelled under the breaking force.
6 of 8
What factors affect the thinking distance?
The age of the driver, under influence of drugs e.g. alcohol, tiredness, distractions, visibility and speed.
7 of 8
What factors affect the breaking distance?
The mass of the vehicle, speed of the vehicle, poor maintenance e.g. worn brakes , poor weather conditions, state of the road, amount of friction between the tyre and road surface.
