What is a producer?
An organism that synthesises organic molecules from simple inorganic ones such as carbon dioxide and water. Most are photosynthetic and form the first trophic level in a food chain.
1 of 8
Give the equation for photosynthesis and an example of a producer that carries out this process?
6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy --> C6H12O6 + 6O2 Green Plants
2 of 8
What is a consumer?
An organism that obtains energy by 'eating' another.
3 of 8
Organisms feeding on producers / plants are known as ___ ___, and the organisms feeding on these are known as ___ ____?
primary consumer, secondary consumer
4 of 8
What is the role of a decomposer?
Organisms that break down complex materials from dead producers/consumers into simple components. This releases valuable minerals & elements which can be absorbed by plants and therefore recycled.
5 of 8
What are detritivores?
Animals such as earthworms that carry out the same work as decomposers.
6 of 8
Each stage in a food chain is referred to as _ ___ ___, and the arrows represent the...?
A trophic level, direction of energy flow.
7 of 8
Most animals do not rely upon a single food source within a single habitat, so...?
Many food chains can be linked together to form a food web.
