food and digestion-biology

?
why do we need to digest food?
f provides energy for the body.In order to reach all parts,it needs to travel in the blood system. To do this food must get through wall of gut as small molecules and needs to be in a form that is soluble in water so can be dissolved into blood.
1 of 8
what is digestion?
converts the food we eat into a form that can be transported into the blood. The complex chemicals in food are broken down into simple soluble substances.
2 of 8
name substances that need to be digested
carbs eg starch-provides energy and is digested into glucose.Proteins-raw material for growth and repair and digested into amino acids.Fats-provide energy and d into fatty acids and glycerol
3 of 8
name the test for food to see if it contains starch
add iodine solution and the positive result is a blue black colour appearing
4 of 8
name the test for food to see if it contains glucose
add benedicts solution.-place in a boiling water bath. The solution will go cloudy and changes from blue to green, orange and then brick red depending on how much glucose is present.
5 of 8
describe the use of the visking tubing to model the gut.
it is selectively permeable so will let small molecules through but not large molecules. so it behaves in a similar way to the lining of the gut.
6 of 8
what are the limitations of the visking tubing to model to gut?
it is non living, so the VT doesn't have mechanisms for activity extracting substances into the cells.Gut moves food around by muscular contractions but VT can't to that.
