FLUVIAL LANDFORMS FORMED BY EROSION AND DEPOSITION

?
Where are meanders found?
- Middle and lower course. - Areas where there are both shallow and deep sections in the channel.
1 of 5
Formation of meanders - 1) river cliffs
-Faster current on outside on bend as channel is deeper (less friction to slow water down). - More erosion on outside of bend, forming river cliffs.
2 of 5
Formation of meanders - 1) slip-off slopes
- Slower current on inside of bend as channel is shallower (more friction to slow water down) - Eroded material is deposited on inside of bend, forming slip-off slopes.
3 of 5
Formation of ox-bow lakes
-Erosion causes meander's outside bends to get closer, until only a small bit of land left between bends ('neck').-River breaks through land, usually during flood+river flows along shortest course.-Deposition cuts off meander, forming ox-bow lake.
