FLUVIAL LANDFORMS FORMED BY DEPOSITION

?
What are flood plains?
- Wide valley floor on either side of river which occasionally gets flooded.
1 of 5
Formation of flood plains
-River floods onto flood plain=water slows down+deposits material(builds up flood plain(makes it higher)).-Meanders migrate across flood plain, making it wider,+migrate downstream, flattening out valley floor.-Slip-off slopes' deposition builds upFP
2 of 5
What are levees?
-Natural embankments along edges of river channel.-During flood eroded material is deposited over whole flood plain.-Heaviest material is deposited closest to river channel, as it gets dropped first when river slows down.-Deposited material builds up
3 of 5
What are estuaries?
-Found at mouth of river.-Land close to sea level+river valley is at its widest.-Water is tidal here(changing water levels)
4 of 5
Formation of estuaries
.-Water floods over river banks carrying silt+sand onto valley floor.-High tide=water moves very slowly so sediment is deposited.-Overtime, more+more mud builds up, creating large areas of mudflats.-Low tide=the wide, muddy banks are exposed.
