Flame Test

How do you carry out a flame test?
Mix a small amount of the compound with hydrochloric acid. Dip a wire into platinum, then into the mixture and hold it under the flame.

Why are colours shown in the flame test?
Electrons move to a higher energy level, then return back to there ground state. In doing so a wavelength of light is released and a colour is shown.

Slide 1: 

Test for metal ions (source below)

  1. Dip nichrome wire in HCl.
  2. Dip wire in solid.
  3. Heat wire in centre of flame.
  4. Observe colour of flame.

Slide 2:  If the question ask why different colors are produced (fact check this) it is due to the shells being different distances apart.
