Fish Gills

?
What are the gills?
The gas exchange in the fish.
1 of 12
How does it work?
Water, that contains oxygen enters the fishes
mouth and passes through the gills. As this happens, oxygen diffuses from the water into the blood in the gills and carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the water.
2 of 12
What is each gill made from?
Thin plates called gill filaments
3 of 12
What do the gill filaments do?
They give a big surface area for the exchange of gases.
4 of 12
What are the gill filaments covered in?
Tiny structures called lamellae
5 of 12
What do the lamellae do?
Increase the surface area more
6 of 12
What else do the lamellae have?
Lots of blood capillaries
7 of 12
What do the blood capillaries do?
They speed up diffusion.
8 of 12
What does the thin surface layer of cells do?
Minimize the distance that the gases have to diffuse.
9 of 12
Talk about the flow of water and blood
Blood flows through the lamellae in one direction and water flows over in the opposite directions
10 of 12
What does this do?
It maintains large concentration gradient between the water and blood.
11 of 12
Is the concentration of oxygen higher in water or blood?
Higher in the blood so as much oxygen as possible diffuses from the water into the blood.
