How does a 'newborns' fine motor skills develop?
A 'newborn' can grasp an adults finger. At 3 months they can hold a rattle for a short duration of time. At 6 months he/she can grasp a toy and pass it from hand to hand. At 12 months he/she can pick up small objects (pincer grasp)

How at '18 months' are fine motor skills developed?
At '18 months' they can build using small blocks, use a spoon, make marks with crayons (palmar grasp). At 2 years old they can put on shoes and control their use of a crayon - circles/dots

How can a '3 year old' develop their fine motor skills?
A '3 year old' (tripod grasp). They can use a fork and spoon, turn pages of a book, button and unbutton clothing. At 4 years of age he/she can thread beads and colour in pictures.

How can a '5 year old' develop their fine motor skills?
A '5 year old' can control their muscles in their fingers to manipulate the construction block and use hand-eye coordination to fit the right pieces together. They can write their name and by 8 years of age they may also join their handwriting.

What is the 'gripping' activity and description?
'Gripping' is the strength in the fingers and hand to firmly hold objects. The activity make be holding a rattle or spoon.

What is the 'manipulation' activity and description?
'Manipulation' is skillful movement of objects using fingers and hands, for example turning, twisting and passing objects. The activity may be building with blocks, playing an instrument, playing and playing with toys.

What is the 'hand-eye coordination' activity and description?
'Hand-eye coordination' is control of eye movement as well as finger or hand movement. The activity may be writing, sewing or completing jigsaw puzzles.
