The Battle of Alma
After the defeat of the Russians at Alma the way to Sevastopol was opened up. The British lost 363 men with 1600 wounded and hit hard at the Russians with 1755 dead and 6,000 wounded. However this caused great strain on the medical services.

They should have formed a square, as they were infantry facing cavalry but instead they formed a line 2 men deep, and this meant they managed to halt the Russian advance.

Lord raglan was the commander in chief, 65 years old and in charge of all the army in the Crimea. Served under Wellington at Waterloo and lost his right arm. Was unaware of the growing tension between earl of Lucan and earl of cardigan

Russian winter jan 1855
Winter storm sank 30 transport ships containing most of the British supplies. Russians still commanded the road between Baklava and Sevastopol and fighting had needed for the winter which left some soldiers stranded.

Cholera raged through the camp reducing the army it only 12,000 effective soldiers
The terrible winter didn't end until March 1855
