Fibre Property Explanations

?
Abrasion Resistance
Ability of a fibre to withstand the effects of rubbing or friction- a major factor in the durability of a fibre
1 of 19
Pilling
the formation of small balls of loose fibres on the surface of a fabric- results from abrasion
2 of 19
Elastic Recovery
Ability of a fibre to return to its original length after it has been stretched
3 of 19
Drape
How a fabric hangs in graceful folds
4 of 19
Resiliency or wrinkle recovery
the ability of a fibre to return to its original shape after being bent or folded
5 of 19
Tenacity
fibre strength- important to wear life of the textile product
6 of 19
Absorbency
Moisture regain- it's ability to take in moisture
7 of 19
Hydrophilic fibres
can absorb moisture= comfortable
8 of 19
Hydrophobic fibres
Do no absorb moisture readily
9 of 19
Hygroscopic fibres
can absorb moisture without feeling wet, e.g. animal hairs
10 of 19
Wicking
a fibres ability to carry moisture along its surface e.g. acrylic
11 of 19
Light Fastness
ability to withstand colour changes on exposure to light
12 of 19
Thermoplastic
most synthetics are thermoplastic, they soften or melt when exposed to heat. Cellulosic/protein may scorch or burn when exposed to high heat
13 of 19
Heat Setting
Applying heat and pressure in a controlled manner to permanently change the shape/improve the dimensional stability of thermoplastic fibres
14 of 19
Fireproof
unaffected by fire
15 of 19
Flame Resistant
will ignite if placed in an open flame but will not continue to burn after the flame has been removed
16 of 19
Flammable
easy to ignite and will continue to burn
17 of 19
Non-combustible
will not burn but can melt and decompose at a high temperature
18 of 19
Self-extinguishing
will stop burning when flame is removed
