The pill is an oral contraceptive which contained high levels of oestrogen and progesterone. It now contains lower doses of oestrogen and has fewer side effects.

Advantages of the pill?
the pill is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It also reduces the risk of getting some types of cancer.

disadvantages of the pill?
it isn't 100% effective and there is still a very slight chance of getting pregnant. It can cause side effects like headaches, nausea, irregular menstrual bleeding and fluid retention. It doesn't protect from STI's.
