How are women seen as important in religion?
Women can get pregnant making them important as they're bringing new life into the world. A womans role is to be expressive leader which is important in religion as its the role of mother to socialise children into belief and worship of God.

Women are seen as being ''temptresses'' (e.g. Eve from Bible), religion believes women distract men from worship because they are sexually attracted to them, and some religions believe staying celibate is the only way to prove devotion to God.

Religion promotes patriarchy and inequality as in most religions women are unable to hold any positions of power. (However Church of England allows women priests. Approximately 1/3 of priests are now women.)

How do religious texts promote patriarchy?
Religious texts promote patriarchy as through their stories they suggest women to be imperfect and profane. This therefore maintains the subordination and expected conformity of women in religion.

What did Beauvoir say about religion?
She said that religion was exploitive and oppressive towards women. Religion suggests that women should have to suffer in their present lives, and they'll be rewarded for it when they're in heaven. Similar to Marxist ideas of the working class.

How can feminist ideology of religion be critiqued?
Women aren't always passive victims, women might reject oppression e.g. In Afghanistan under the the Taliban girls were not allowed to go to school so they were educated in secret.

How else can feminist ideology be critiqued?
Religion isn't necessarily patriarchal e.g. The viel is seen as liberating in Muslim religion as it affirms cultural identity and protects them and allows them to go out in public and enter into places of education, work etc.
