using marxist concepts but see the exploitation of women as a key feature of family life. mainly people who exploit are the ruling class.

women's role being at home so she can attend to her husbands needs which keeps him healthy in order for him to go out to work.

emotional support provided by the woman acts as a 'safety valve' for the frustration produced by the husband by working in a capitalist system. frustration absorbed by the wife, so system is under no threat.

family is a 'ideological conditioning device in an exploitive society', children submit to authority in the family, they do what they are told, which gives them a good foundation for in the workplace.

Criticisms of marxist feminism
doesn't focus on modern families(eg homosexual ones), exaggerate the harm caused to women, dismisses the idea that there may be advantages of women in the family, they dont see women as being happy in the family.

Liberal feminists
believe the main reason for women getting exploited is due to ignorance and socialisation. believe men and women are gradually becoming more equal, evidence is laws being passed eg sex discrimination act 1970. patriarchal society still.

Radical feminists
see society and institutions dominated and ruled by men, men are the ruling class and women are the subject class. want to eliminate all men in power. think men dominate in work and family life.
