Because they feared they would be punished for not helping the winning side, and they would have strained relations with the winning side.

The Triple Entente because they signed the treaty of LOndon, which would give them south tyrol, trentio, istria, triste, and north dalmatia, plus political power.

Helped hardern attitudes of interventionalists against parliment, and strengthen demands for territory, and exaggirated suggnificance of individuals such as mussolini, who was pro war, and kicked out the socialist party, gave credit for entering war.

had poor leadership, disease, bad equiptment, suffered 24,000 casualties on Austrian front. Only had one real success, the capture of Gorizia august 1916

1917, Austrian, with german forces, broke the italian lines at caporetto, and pushed them back down to the river piave. hundreds of italian soldiers fled from confusion, huge humiliation for Italy. This lost italy territorial gains, and men.

1918, with brittish and french forces, Italy launched attack on the river piave, and reclaimed it, and an armistace was signed by austrias request,and Germany stopped fighting a week later. Caporetto had been avenged, but over 600,000 Italians died.

Most economic growth, had been the govts spending on wartime items, the peace meant businesses contracted. To finance the war the Govt had taken loans from USA 1914-1919, and printed more money, which led to inflation.

deepend the North/south divide, wartime boom mainly benefited North. Industrialisation was happening in the North.

The fact that Italy had had such loses and economic costs of war and didn't get all the land they were promised. they had little benefit, ppl blamed the govt. and it exposed more weakness,

was signed 1919, which gave italy, some of the land they wanted, South tyrol, trentio, and istria.

1919, 2000 soldiers led by d'annunzio mainly deserters and mutineers. seized it.

What did Giolitti do about this?
Giolittie arranged a Treaty of Rapallo 1920, gave Italy the whole of Istria, and Italian speakers in dalmatia could choose to become italian citizens, fume independant city.

What did D'annunzio do in responce?
But D'annunzio didnt accept this and declared war on Italy. Giolitti orderd a battleship to stop them, killing 52 troops, four days later he gave up, but the govt wanted to avoid publicity, never put him on trial.

What was the significance of this?
People saw Giolliti attempt to stop this as national betrayal. , also exposing weakness of the state. and showed the loyalty of army could not be taken for granted. techniques of this helped Mussolini influence his approach to fascism.
