Functionalists suggest has been replaced by isolated NF. Lane, Spencer and McCready (2012) found it still found among small communities of travellers and WC communities, South Asian communites.

1 in 3 households today contains 1 person, compared to 1 in 20 in 1901. Under half are over pensionable aged, compared to 2/3 in 1971. Less social stigma. Individualisation- autonomy and freedom. Women choose singlehood for career.

Cultural Diversity - Caribbean
Bethoud (2001) - fam life in community based on 'modern individuism' Marriage is a lifestyle option. Less important in communities with high levels of LPF. Mixed partners, 1/2 of black men w/ white prtnrs. 1/4 black kids live w 2 parents.

Cultural Diversity - South Asian
Ballard (1982)-extended fam relations more common in minority ethnic groups in SA, most patriarchal. Life based on old-fashioned values e.g.arranged marriage. Around 3/4 Pakistani n Bangladeshi women are married by 25. Women care for home n family.

Social Class & Regional Diversity
Classic xtended fams are more likely to be found in traditional WC comms. Charles (2008) found in study of Swansea only hroup classic xtended fams exist was ethnic minority pop. Inner city=more LPF&pov.2011 census-cncl areas with highest 65+ on coast
