They see every institution in society as essential to the smooth running of society. (Murdoch 1949) Some say Functionalists have a negative view on the family.

They see the family as supporting the roles of capitalism, helping Bourgeoisie and hindering Proletariat.

Engels says that the main role of the family is to keep wealth within the Bourgeoisie through inheritance.

Zaretsky (1976)
He says the family helps the capitalist economy. A family gives the proletariat man a place to be in power and be 'king of his castle', relieving pressure and accepting oppression.

Role is to be a 'housewife' and care for the man to make him more productive helping the Bourgeoisie.

Their view is too negative and does not mention 'nice' things. They always assume worker is male, and there is no explanation why.
