Divorce was allowed after 1 year of marraige rather than 3 years

Interviewed them twice a year and captured the divorce process. Smart looked at changed circumstances and reflections on decisions and feeligns throughout the process.

It may look like roles are shared between parents, but women are always doing more for their children. Mothers always have the sense of responsibilty for their children.

These children were more likely to be involved in delinquency, early sexual intercourse, have emotional distress and academic difficulties.

There are no direct links between family structures and the outcome of children

Selected characteristics of certain parents are prone to divorce and other problems which affect parental roles (drugs and alcohol)

Strain of relationship breakdown can affect womens and children's financial status. This has adverse effects (emotionally) on their ability to look after children properly.

Conflict of loyalties. Less stable marial relationship. Establishment of new relationships with step parents and siblings.
