What is a family?
A family is a basic unit of society. It is a group of people of various ages who are usually related through birth, marriage or adoption.

What are the functions of a family?
To provide for the child's needs which include: food, shelter, warm, clothing, love, companionship, protection, support, care, training and a secure environment in which they can develop into young adults.

Family ties are often due to:
Blood, affection, duty, shared experiences and common interests.

Name the 7 types of families:
Extended families, nuclear families, one parent families, step-families, shared-care families, foster families and residential children's home.

Extended families often help and support each other in a number of ways such as:
Providing comfort at times of distress. Helping parents to bring up their children. Looking after the children when there is an emergency or when the parents are working. Giving advice on problems. Helping financially.

The traditional pattern of family life has changed in many countries, why might this be?
There has been an increase in the efficiency and availability of contraception methods, which has led to fewer children being born. Many families have moved away from the family base due to the changing industrial society. Grandparents are living....

longer and are more independent. Many mothers now go out to work and so the responsibility of bringing up children and making money is shared. Divorce is easier and has become more socially expectable. Laws have been introduced which give women much
more independence .

What are the advantages of these changes?
The farther has a closer relationship with their children. Mothers have more time to enjoy their children and to follow other interests. Children benefit from a greater variety. The quality of marriage improves.

What is an extended family?
A large family group which includes grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins.

What is a nuclear family?
A nuclear family that consists of parents and their children that forms a self-contained family unit in a separate household.

What is a one parent family?
Is a family in which the child is brought up by only one parent.

How does religion and culture affect family life?
It may provide a set of rules for behaviour. Certain times will be dedicated for worship and festivals. The way in which the family dresses, eats and partakes in lesiure activities will be effected.

What factors have to be considered when planning a family?
Income/financial implications. Parental age. Size of family, sibling relationships and the age gaps between children. Whether you are in a stable relationship. Physical, social and emotional needs. Career implications.
