What did they do?
Followed a group off 65 British children, placed in institution from less than 4 months old, from early life to adolescence (at 4 months have not yet formed attachments) caretakert were explicitly not allowed to form attachments with the children

What did they find?
70% described as not able to care deeply about anyone early on (conclude most has early emotional privation) interviews up to 16yr showed - restored children = less likely to form attachment to mothers/ readopted = more likely

What did ex-institutional children have issues with?
Peers - less likely to form a special friend or be liked by other children and more likely to be bullies. Also attantion seeking a sign of DIS-INHIBITED attachment.

What do these findings suggest?
Early privation has adverse affects on children's later relationships even when given good subsequent emotional care (supports Bowlbey's view - failure to form attachment during sensitive period = irreversible effects)

What is attachment disorder?
A psychiatric condition where the disruption/privation of attachment has psychological and emotional effects on a child, they have no attachment figure and thus an inibility to interact with others

What are the two kinds of Attachment Disorder?
Reactive/inhibited = shy and withdrawn so cannot cope with most social situations and disinhibited attachment = over friendly and attention seeking

What did Rutter et al study?
Group of 100 Romanian orphans who were adopted by British families. Found those adopted before 6 months = normal emotional development. Those after showed disinhibited attachment

What studies support poor parenting?
Harlows monkeys showed that they became bad mothers. Quinton et al studied 100 women 50 raised at home 50 in care. Ex-institutional showed a lack of care to children, these spent more time in day care
