What will occur to the rate of photosynthesis as light intensity continuously increases?
The rate increases further and further until a point is reached where any further increase to the light intensity has no effect on the rate of photosynthesis. At which point another factor (e.g. CO2 concentration) becomes the limiting factor.
1 of 11
What is the law of limiting factors?
At any given moment, the rate of a physiological process is limited by the factor that is at its least favourable value.
2 of 11
What two ways is the rate of Photosynthesis measured?
1. The volume of oxygen released by plant. 2. The volume of carbon dioxide taken up by plant.
3 of 11
Why on a graph of light intensity compared to rate of photosynthesis does the curve plateau?
When photosynthesis is exactly balanced by the oxygen absorbed and the carbon produced by cellular respiration. There will be no net exchange of gases into or out of the plant. (the light compensation point)
4 of 11
What is the optimum concentration of CO2 for a consistently high rate of photosynthesis?
0.1 per cent
5 of 11
What does CO2 concentration affect in the reactions involved in photosynthesis?
It affects enzyme activity, in particular the enzyme that catalyses the combination of RuBP (Ribulose Bisphosphate) and carbon dioxide in the light-independent reaction.
6 of 11
What occurs to the rate of photosynthesis between temperatures 0-25 degrees celcius?
it is approximately doubled for each 10 degree rise in temp.
7 of 11
What is the optimum temperature for plants?
25 degrees Celcius
8 of 11
When and why does the rate deterioate in temperature increase?
Above 25 degrees due to denaturation of enzymes.
9 of 11
what types of reaction are not usually affected by temperatue?
Photochemical reactions (therefore photosynthesis is shown there is also chemical proceses involved and not just photochemical.
10 of 11
What is the chemical process in photosynthesis?
The light-independent reaction
