What is the Preferential Looking Task?
Children look longer at face stimuli (Goren, Sarty & Wu, 1975). Children also aren't as good at recognising faces as adults (Mondloch, Le Grand & Maurer, 2002).

What is holistic processing?
Integrating info from the whole object, it focuses on the relationship between features, familiar faces can be recognised in under half a second by the age of 6 (Buce, Young 1986, Carey, Diamond, 1994).

What is the Thatcher illusion?
Face inversion effect - when a face is inverted we miss key features.

Focuses on the external contours & internal features

Focuses on the spacing between internal features (Mondloch et al 2003, Jane & her sister task).

What is Prosopagnosia?
Greek word for 'face' & 'without knowledge', severe impairment in face recognition but object recognition remains intact.

Which area of the brain is often damaged in patients with Prosopagnosia?
Fusiform area which is in the ventral temporal cortex, neuroimaging studies have shown that the fusiform face area is activated more when participants are recognising faces compared to objects.

What studies were done to look into patients with Prosopagnosia (P)?
Busigny et al 2010 - compared male patient with P to a healthy control group, they had to recognise several categories of objects, the patient was less accurate when recognising faces but not with objects.
