Negative feedback
A process in which any change in a parameter brings about the reversal of that change so that the parameter is kept fairly constant.
1 of 14
Positive feedback
A process in which any change in a parameter brings about an increase in that change.
2 of 14
Homeostasis
The maintenance of the internal environment in a constant state, within narrow limits, despite external changes.
3 of 14
Endocrine gland
A gland that secretes hormones directly into the blood.
4 of 14
Exocrine gland
A gland that secretes substances into a duct that carries the substance to where it is used.
5 of 14
Hormones
Molecules that are released by endocrine glands directly into the blood. They act as chemical messengers, carrying a signal from the endocrine gland to a specific target organ or tissue.
6 of 14
Target tissue
The target cells are those that possess a specific receptor on their plasma membrane. The shape of the receptor is complementary to the shape of the hormone molecule. Many similar cells together form a tissue.
7 of 14
First messenger
The hormone that transmits the signal around the body
8 of 14
Second messenger
cAMP, which transmits a signal inside the cell.
9 of 14
Excretion
The removal of metabolic waste from the body.
10 of 14
Autotroph
An organism that can make complex organic molecules from inorganic molecules/CO2.
11 of 14
Heterotroph
An organism that needs to feed on and digest complex organic molecules.
12 of 14
Photosynthetic pigment
Molecules that absorb light energy. Each pigment absorbs a range of wavelengths in the visible region and has its own distinct peak of absorption. Other wavelengths are reflected.
13 of 14
Respiratory substrate
An organic substance that can be used for respiration.
