Deserts
Deserts are places that receive little or no rainfall. Hot and dry
1 of 10
Rainforests
Hot and wet all year
2 of 10
Desertification
Desertification is where areas of a desert are created by the destruction of natural vegetation
3 of 10
Hadley Cell
Hadley Cell is a weather system where there is rising and falling air around the tropics.
4 of 10
Convectional Rainfall
Convectional Rainfall. Stage 1. The sun heats the ground and warm air rises. Stage 2. As the air rises it cools and water vapour condenses to form clouds
5 of 10
Canopy
The second highest layer – 30-45 metres. The crowns of the trees knit together to form a dense canopy. The canopy blocks out the sun from lower layers and intercepts (catches) rainfall. It contains the most plant species.
6 of 10
Tundra
A vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen.
7 of 10
Polar
Cold all year. Arctic and Antarctica
8 of 10
Deforestation
Deforestation means the removal of trees. It is happening at an alarming rate. It is estimated that an area of rainforest about the size of a football pitch is destroyed each second.
9 of 10
Emergent Layer
The tallest layer - over 40 metres. Contains only a few tall trees which grow taller than the trees of the canopy. The plants are made for living in dry conditions because it’s very sunny. They have small, waxy leaves to prevent them drying out.
