what is an extreme environment?
An extreme environment is a habitat that is considered very hard to survive in due to its considerably extreme conditions such as temperature, accessibility to different energy sources or under high pressure.
1 of 14
what are the different extreme environments?
Examples of extreme environments include the geographical poles, very arid deserts, volcanoes, deep ocean trenches, upper atmosphere, Mt Everest, outer space, and the environments of every planet in the Solar System except the Earth.
2 of 14
Where are these extreme environments?
Brazil (rain forest), Antarctica (freezing), Africa (hot) and Nepal (Mount Everest no oxygen and cold)
3 of 14
What is Antarctica like as an extreme environment?
Antarctica can be called a desert because of its low levels of precipitation, which is mainly snow. ... Antarctica has the coldest land temperature recorded on the Earth, -89.2°C. The average annual temperature is around -50°C.

What does a climate graph show about an extreme environment?
A climate graph contains two pieces of information. The amount of rainfall and the temperature of an area. The temperature is shown as a line and the rainfall is displayed as bars.
5 of 14
What are the main challenges of living/ working/ visiting Antarctica?
Climate change / Global warming, resulting in a warming of the sea and loss of sea ice and land-based ice, this is greatest long-term threat to the region. Fishing, both legal and illegal. Invasive species.
6 of 14
How would you overcome these challenges?
climate change = spread the news. fishing = make sure your aloud to fish there before you do. Invasive species = Buy special equipment such as a polar bear proof tent.

What are the key features of a hot desert environment?
The climate is very dry with less than 250 mm of rainfall a year. Hot deserts have two distinct seasons: summer, when the temperature ranges between 35-40°C, and winter, when the temperature ranges between 20-30°C.
8 of 14
Where are the world's hot deserts?
The hot deserts of the world are located between 15° and 30° north or south of the equator. This is a zone of subsiding or sinking air. Air that rises due to the intense heat at the equator divides to flow north and south.
9 of 14
How are animals adapted to the hot desert environment?
The two main adaptations that desert animals must make are how to deal with lack of water and how to deal with extremes in temperature. Since water is so scarce, most desert animals get their water from the food they eat: succulent plants and seeds.
10 of 14
How is daily life in the hot desert environment challenging?
there is less rainfall because of global warming

Who are the Tuareg?
The Tuareg people are about 2 million nomadic people who live across the Sahara Desert, including in the North African countries of Mali, Niger, Libya, Algeria and Chad. The Tuaregs are part of the Berber group of people, and they are largely Muslim.

What is desertification and why is it happening?
Desertification occurs due to a decrease in vegetation. This can happen naturally due to a drought or can be caused by human activities.Plants help shade the soil, so when plants are removed, the soil will be exposed to the sun and will dry out.
13 of 14
How do other people adapt and cope with living in a hot desert environment?
Omniverous diet, able to eat a wide variety of foods as well as meat. Living in tents with open central vent to create cooling breezes. Use of animals such as camels and goats for food and clothing.
