What are some types of External factors impacting class differences in educational achievement?

How does cultural capital impact educational achievement?

Bourdieu suggests that cultural & material factors impact achievement. The mc have 3 types of capital;
-Economic - private schooling
-Cultural - knowledge, values, skills & attitudes
-Educational - Meet the demands of the curriculum

How does cultural deprivation impact educational achievement?

Many wc children are culturally deprived of values, attitudes & skills to aid achievement. Schools use elaborated code, whilst wc children are socialised into restricted code. Wc parents place less value of education and spend less to promote achievement.

-Collectivism - being apart of a group
-Immediate gratification
-Present time orientation

How does material deprivation impact educational achievement?

The wc lack the resources to aid achievement. Tis includes;
-Housing
-Poor diet & health
-Costs of education
-Fear of debt

How does selection by mortgage impact educational achievement?

Middle class parents can afford houses in the catchment area of good schools (based on league tables). This drives up the cost of houses near successful schools, which excludes the wc who cannot afford them therefore they go to less successful schools.

Working class parents fail to socialise their children into these basic norms & skills for education.
