Explosion Welding

?
What is Explosion Welding?
A solid state welding process that produces a weld by high velocity impact of workpieces as the result of a controlled detonation.
1 of 8
How do the metals become molten at the interface?
The heat comes from a shock wave associated with impact and from the energy expended in the collision. Heat is also released through plastic deformation.
2 of 8
What type of metals is it usually used to weld?
Dissimilar metals.
3 of 8
What is significant about an explosion welded joint?
It has a very pronounced profile like a wave shape, the force of the explosion causes the metals at the interface to be truly bonded and share valence electrons.
4 of 8
Why is explosion welding useful in marine environments?
Due to the way in which the two metals are bonded there is a considerable amount of galvanic corrosion.
5 of 8
How does the weld not disturb the effects of cold working the material?
It is in regards to the extreme rate at which the cooling occurs in the joint.
6 of 8
How is the aluminium and steel superstructure aided by explosion welding?
A ***** of aluminium is explosion welded to steel, then the steel hull and aluminium superstructure can be individually welded to either side of the explosion welded part.
7 of 8
Why is an angle needed when using spacer pieces between the two plates?
The angle forms directionality for the debris being expelled from the material as the explosion takes place, if the angle is too shallow there can be inclusion of debris in the weld from the spacers.
