what is the learning theory of attachment?
when infants learn to be attached to primary caregiver through classical/operant conditioning, it can also be referred to as 'cupboard love' essentially, infants will from an attachment to whoever feeds them.

what is the classical conditioning method for attachment?
before-> milk (u.s)=happy baby (u.r)
before-> parent (n.s)=unhappy baby (n.r)
during-> milk(u.s)+parent(n.s)=happy baby (u.r)
after-> parent (c.s)=happy baby (c.r)

how can operant conditioning apply here and who suggested it?
Dollard and Miller applied it to attachment, saying that reinforcement enabled the baby to be 'rewarded' from food by crying (positive reinforcement) and allows the parent to be 'rewarded' as they remove the sound of the baby crying (negative reinforcemen

name the evaluations
-contradictory research from Harlow as they preferred the tm
-contradictory research by Lorenz, says its innate as the imprinting happened after hatching
-methodological issues, pavlov and skinner's theory applies to animals not humans

continuing from previous one
-bowlby proposes another theory w the idea that infants have an innate desire to form an attachments w caregiver during critical period to protect them from danger and increase chance of survival
5 of 10
what does bowlby's theory of attachment propose?
an evolutionary perspective to enhance survival in generations.
6 of 10
what acronym does he use and explain the ones you can't remember?
a(adaptive)-gives an advantage to humans to enhance survival features, snap(social releasers)-physical, baby face, button nose and behavioural,crying,etc, chat(critical period)-has to happen at 3-6mnths it could happen later but it's hard and otherwise it

carrying on from previous slide
makes(motoropoy)- forming one special bond w mother, one special attachment there, can be the mother sub instead, images(internal working model)- healthy relationships can act as a template for future relationships

name the evaluations
+r.s Lorenz w the idea that imprinting is innate and critical/sensitive period, it is evolutionary
+r.s hazan and shaver did the love quiz and found a correlation between childhood/adult experiences in attachment (+IWM)
-mixed evidence for monotropy-
9 of 10
continuing from previous card
-Schaffer and Emerson found infants are able to form multiple important attachments
-alternative attachment explanation, kagan argues infants inherit it genetically making them more or less sociable/anxious.
