What is intereference?
Intereference occurs when two pieces of information conflict with each other. Interference mainly explains forgetting in LTM. Stronger when memories are similar or when there is little time between learning the info.

What is proactive intereference?
PAST info hinders ability to recall currently learnt info.
2 of 10
What is retroactive interference?
Learning something NEW disrupts previously learnt info. McGeogh and McDonald- ptpts learnt a list of words till they knew them then learnt a new list.

What is the issues with the experimental method that supports interference theory?
The high internal validity due to the control (all groups given same list). We can know there wasn't confounding variables. Low ecological validity due to lack of mundane realism. Not realistic task.

What is some supporting evidence for interference?
(field)
Baddeley and Hitch asked rugby players to recall the names of teams recently played and found that recall for the most recent game was as good no matter when it was played. Not decay, interference.

What is one criticism for Intereference Theory? (cues)
Tulving and Psotka- Gave ptpts lists to learn- recall was 70% for first list which progressively got

What is some supporting evidence for state dependent forgetting?
(sober vs drunk)
Goodwin et al tested students when they were either drunk or sober when they learnt the material and found if they were in the same state they would perform better on the test.

What is some support for context dependent forgetting (cdf)?
(divers)
Godden and Baddeley tested divers either when they were in the sea or on land and found that if they were in a different location to when they learnt it then their recall was 40% worse.

What is one support for context dependent forgetting (cdf)?
(real life application)
The cognitive interview technique involves techniques like "reinstate the context" which tries to recreate cues. Milne and Bull found this is one of the most effective interview techniques.
9 of 10
What is one issue with context dependent forgetting?
(lack of real life effects)
One issue with Godden and Baddeleys's research is its lack of real life application. Baddeley admitted that the cdf had to be exaggerated as its effects in real life can be minimal.
