What is a laboratory experiment?
An experiment conducted under highly controlled conditions. The independent variable is manipulated by the researcher and the dependent variable is the change being measured by the researcher.
1 of 9
What are the strengths of laboratory experiments?
Allow control of variables, allows us to establish cause and effect, easily replicated.
2 of 9
What are the weaknesses of laboratory experiments?
Demand characteristics, can be unethical, low ecological validity.
3 of 9
What is a field experiment?
Experiment conducted in a real life situation. Participants are usually unaware that they are involved. The IV is still being manipulated.
4 of 9
What are strengths of field experiments?
High ecological validity, less likely to show demand characteristics.
5 of 9
What are the weaknesses of field experiments?
Hard to control, time consuming/expensive, difficult to gain informed consent and to debrief the participants.
6 of 9
What is a quasi experiment?
The independent variable is not manipulated as it is naturally occurring.
7 of 9
What are the strengths of quasi experiments?
Participants often unaware they are taking part so less demand characteristics. Not as artificial as lab experiments so high ecological validity.
8 of 9
What are the weaknesses of quasi experiments?
Harder to establish cause and effect, less control.
