what features should an exchange surface have? And why?
large surface area- it increases the substance exchange. Thin-shorter distance across which a substance has to diffuse. Diffusion gradient-concentration of the substance on one side must be different from the concentration on the other side.
1 of 5
describe the mammalian gas exchange system.
Mouth/nose, diaphragm, thorax, trachea, lungs, bronchus, bronchioles, alveoli.
2 of 5
list the different epithelial tissues.
ciliated cells, goblet cells, cartilage, smooth muscle, elastic fibres.
3 of 5
explain the term vital capacity
the very largest volume of air you can move in and out of your lungs with one breath.
4 of 5
explain how the alveoli are protected from drying out
they are tucked away inside the body, away from direct exposure to dry air. Cells secret a watery fluid that covers the cells lining the alveoli, keeping them moist.
