More than 3 Billion years ago, life on earth began as simple organisms from which all the more complex organisms evolved, rather than just randomly existing

What do evolutionary trees show?
Common ancestors and relationships between organisms. The more recent the common an

Why do species with similar characteristics often have similar genes?
Because they share a recent common ancestor, so they're closely related.
3 of 8
Describe the theory of natural selection.
Individuals within a species show variation because of the differences in their genes. Individuals with characteristics that make them better adapted are more likely to survive and breed succesfully.
4 of 8
Describe how evolution can occur due to mutations.
A mutation is a change in an organisms DNA, occasionally they can be beneficial by producing a useful characteristic. this characteristic may give the organism a better chance of surviving and reproducing.

What was Lamarck's theory? Why wasn't it accepted?
That if a characteristic was used a lot by an organism, it would become more developed during it's lifetime e.g rabbit's legs. He believed these characteristics would be passed on to the next generation. But experiments didn't support it.

Why didn't everyone agree with Darwin?
Because it was against common religious beliefs, Darwin couldn't explain himself, There wasn't enough evidence.
7 of 8
How did the discovery of genetics support Darwin's idea.
It provided an explanation of how organisms born with beneficial characteristics can pass them on.
