What is meant by evolution?

When organisms have developed from simple life forms and changed over time

What is the main difference between Lamarck's theory of evolution and Darwin's theory?

Lamarck suggested that characteristics that were developed during the lifetime of an organism would be passed on to its offspring whereas Darwin suggested that organisms with the best charateristics survived to breed

Why did it take so long for Darwin's theory to be accepted?

There was not enough evidence and and many people were religious and beleived that God created everything

Why is it that only some members of a population survive to breed?

Organisms compete for things like food or light so if an organism is well adapted to its environment it will survive

Why is there varation between members of the same species?

If the offspring are produced by sexual reproduction then they will look different from other members of the species

What is meant by the term survival of the fittest?

Those that are best adapted to their environment will survive long enough to breed

What is meant by natural selection?

Organisms which are best adapted to the environment survive, breed and pass on their genes to the next genereation
