Evolution in Action & Evidence for Evolution (2.3.3)

?
How has resistance to insecticides developed?
The insects may be able to break down the insecticide. Or the target receptor protein on the cell membrane may be modified.
1 of 8
How could antibiotics have a better chance of working?
Allow our own immune system to deal with minor infection, so we wouldn't be selecting for resistant bacteria. Then use antibiotics only when you have a severe infection.
2 of 8
Why do people get ill if they don't finish their course of antibiotics?
This allows resistant bacteria to survive and reproduce to create a resistant strain of bacteria.
3 of 8
What evidence did Darwin have for evolution?
Old species have died out, new species have arisen, the new species that appeared are often similar the older ones found in the same place.
4 of 8
What did Darwin see from looking at fossilised organisms and similar organisms from today?
They were similar, but had their differences, suggesting the modern species had variations that meant they were better adapted to the environment.
5 of 8
How do fossils suggest evolution?
There is a general trend in the fossil records going from smaller, simple organisms in the past to larger, more complex organisms today.
6 of 8
What is the problem with fossil evidence?
Fossils are incomplete. Only the hard parts of an organism survive to become a fossil. Many living things don't have hard parts, so leave no fossil. Fossils only form under certain conditions.
7 of 8
How do biological molecules provide evidence for evolution?
Certain biological molecules are found throughout the living world. Two closely related species will have similar biological molecules and would have evolved recently as separate species.
