EVOLUTION

HideShow resource information
What is meant by acquired characteristics?
Characteristics which we develop during our lifetime, e.g. developed muscles, hair colour due to dyeing it.
1 of 16
Who suggested the theory of evolution by natural selection?
Charles Darwin.
2 of 16
What name is given to Darwin's theory of evolution?
Natural selection.
3 of 16
Which birds did Darwin observe to find evidence for evolution?
Finches on the Galapagos Islands.
4 of 16
Why do organisms show a wide range of variation?
Variation is due to differences in their genes.
5 of 16
Why did some rabbits survive myxomatosis?
They had a mutated gene, which gave them immunity to the disease.
6 of 16
What are the main kingdoms of living organisms?
Animals, plants, microorganisms.
7 of 16
Why is it useful to draw evolutionary trees?
They show the relationships between organisms.
8 of 16
Name a hard part of an animal that will not decay easily.
Anyone of: bones, teeth, shells, claws.
9 of 16
Why is the fossil record incomplete?
The fossils have been destroyed by Earth movements or other climatic conditions, or the fossils were not formed in the first place because the conditions were not suitable.
10 of 16
How can a new predator cause extinction of a species?
It eats all the animals of that species.
11 of 16
Name a catastrophic event that could destroy a large number of habitats.
Volcano, earthquake, tsunami, collision by asteroid.
12 of 16
Why might a species die out if the climate changes?
It may be too hot or too cold for the organism to survive, the food supply might change.
13 of 16
Suggest another factor which could have caused the dinosaurs to die out.
A new disease being introduced into the population. It is unlikely to be a new predator because dinosaurs were at the top of the food chain.
14 of 16
How do populations become isolated?
Islands break away from the mainland, new rivers form, mountain ranges or craters separate them.
15 of 16
What is meant by 'genetic variation'?
The wide range of alleles that control the characteristics in a population.
