What is a Skill?
A skill is a learned ability - you aren't born with a skill! It's done predictably and consistently - can be performed whenever - and is performed with efficiency - performed smoothly with minimum outlay of time or energy.

Characteristics of a skilled Performer:
1) Fluent. 2) Aesthetically Pleasing. 3) Effective. 4) Efficient. 5) Consistent. 6) Goal Directed. 7) Co-ordinated. 8) Learned. 9) Successful.

1) Perception Skills
Perception is the interpretation of information or stimuli. E.g. Assessing the position of team mates in a football game and deciding where to pass the ball and how hard to hit it.

2) Cognitive Skills
Involves the intellectual ability of the performer. They are linked to problem solving and essential if performer is to make the correct and effective decisions. E.g. in football, deciding what type of pass to use when your team is well defended.

Goal Setting
It's used to motivate people to exercise & follow healthy lifestyles. In sport, it's used as a useful strategy for training and performance, & increases motivation, confidence, effort & controls anxiety.It focuses your attention & concentration.

1) Performance Goals - Short term.
Goals that are directly related to the performance or techniques of the activity. They focus on the quality of the performance & may be related to skill, technique or fitness. E.g. goal of improving passing techniques in netball.

2) Outcome Goals - Medium to long term.
They are goals concerned with the end result - whether you win or lose & are affected by the performance of the individual. E.g. an outcome goal may be, in netball, to win a match or a tournament.
