How do liberal feminists say the NF oppresses women?
(still a place of work)
Oakley says the NF hasn't freed women from the burdens of housework therefore forces them to do the majority of house work and look after children. Gives women less time to have work or do other interests.

What is a criticism of Oakley's belief that the family is still a place of work for women?
Hakim says that women actually choose to be the housewife through rational decision making. He says some women find this role more fulfilling and so CHOOSE to engage in unpaid domestic labour.

How do liberal feminists say the NF oppresses women?
(ideological control)
Oakley says that family serves a function of socialising the next generation of females into the gender roles (canalisation). This is done through toys etc and means that girls grow up thinking about being able to do domestic labour.

What is one criticism of Oakley's theory about ideological control in the NF?
Marxists like Althusser say that this ideological control isn't gendered and instead is to serve capitalism. Therefore, we could assume that the socialisation process is actually to integrate people into capitalist norms rather than gendered ones.

How do radical feminists say the NF oppresses women?
Radical feminists say that men use methods like domestic violence and **** to control women. They believe the NF is made to maintain the patriarchal structure and to make sure men's needs are met eg sexually or domestically.

What is one criticism of the radical feminist view of the NF oppressing women?
Parsons would say that the family actually acts as a "warm bath" in which people can "wash" off tensions by playing or talking to family members. Therefore, the NF actually could allow people to relax. (word this carefully!!)

How do Marxist feminists say the NF oppresses women?
Delphy and Leonard say that women act as a "safety valve" to help prevent frustration from workers about low pay etc. This means that bosses have to worry less about protests as workers can be stabilised by emotional work.

What is one criticism of how Marxist feminists say the NF oppresses women?
Postmodernists would point out that not all women have the same roles and most have jobs themselves. This means that they would surely be frustrated themselves at low pay etc yet would have to help their husband?
