What is the first suggestion for family roles becoming more symmetrical?
Young and Wilmott say that the decrease in the extended family and the rise in the nuclear family lead to families needing to be more independent which means that if the roles are separate the family couldn't function.

What is one criticism of Young and Wilmott's theory?
Oakley says this isn't true as the study they did didn't find that men help as women still do 2/3 of the housework.

What is the second reason for family roles becoming more symmetrical?
Laurie and Gershunny say that women being in employment more is a reason for symmetrical roles as women are working more therefore have less time and men tend to do the work to help.

What is one criticism of Laurie and Gershunny's theory?
Women tend to have to still do the majority of housework alongside their normal job (dual burden) and also will later have to do the emotional care of children (triple shift).

What is the third reason for family roles becoming more symmetrical?
Silver suggested that commercialisation of housework made it less time consuming as a machine can do it so a man can be more encouraged to do it and women can do other tasks or relax.
5 of 8
What is one criticism of Silver's theory?
Women still have to organise the housework as they have to put the washing in the washing machine etc so the housework may not be split so much.

What is the fourth reason for family roles becoming more symmetrical?
Postmodernists like Beck say that families now negotiate roles and therefore split them more easily as a man may decide one day to do the washing up etc to help get the jobs done.

What is one criticism of Beck's theory?
Oakley says women are still socialised into roles like through toys as women have doll houses which teach looking after the house. The work not split so easily due to women still doing the work.
