What is euthanasia?
the ending of life because a person is in pain and is suffering

What is Voluntary euthanasia?
when a persons death happens with their consent without coercion

What is non-voluntary euthanasia?
done without consent of patient e.g. is the patient is in a coma

What is Involuntary euthanasia?
done against the wishes of the patient

What is Passive euthanasia?
stopping doing something (eating/ drinking/ receiving treatment) so the person eventually dies

What is Active euthanasia?
doing something deliberate to end a persons life e.g. pulling the plug on life support, taking pills

DANIEL JAMES- young rugby player, paralysed, chose to die at Dignitas. TONY NICKLINSON- locked-in syndrome after a stroke, refused food and treatment for pneumonia

NAN MAITLAND- 84 year old chose to die at Dignitas rather than suffer a 'dwindling old age'

How would Christian ethics apply to euthanasia?
NO/YES because euthanasia is linked to suicide, against God's plan and will, sanctity of life should be preserved BUT situation ethics may say it is the most loving thing to do

How would Natural Law apply to euthanasia?
NO/YES because it goes against the primary precept of preservation of life, taking life is intrinsically wrong, nature should take its course BUT doctrine of double effect, patient can refuse treatment

How would Utilitarianism apply to euthanasia?
YES/NO because rejects sanctity of life, focuses on quality of life- pleasure vs pain, Mill stresses autonomy BUT patients interests are minority, doctors and family is majority- greatest good

How would Kantian ethics apply to euthanasia?
NO because people ends not means, patient has moral duty to family and friends, doctors have duty to sustain life, decisions must be made using reason and should be objective, euthanasia is hard to be universalised
