What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)?
folds and processes proteins that have been made at the ribosomes
1 of 14
What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
synthesises and processes lipids
2 of 14
what is the function of vesicles?
transports substances in and out of the cell (via the plasma membrane) and between organelles
3 of 14
what is the function of the golgi aparatus?
processes and packages new lipids and proteins. it also makes lysosomes
4 of 14
what is the function of mitochondrion?
the site of aerobic respiration where ATP is produced.
5 of 14
what is the function of chloroplasts?
the site where photosynthesis takes place. some parts of photosynthesis happens in the grana and other parts in the stroma
6 of 14
what is the function of centrioles?
involved with the seperation of chromosomes during cell division
7 of 14
what is the function of cillia?
the microtubules allow the cillia to move. this movement is used by the cell to move substances along the cell surface
8 of 14
what is the function of flagellum?
the microtubules contract to make the flagellum move. flagella are used to propel cells forward
9 of 14
what is the function of the plasma (cell surface) membrane?
regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell. it also has receptor molecules, which allow it to respond to chemicals like hormones
10 of 14
what is the function of the cell wall?
supports plant cells
11 of 14
what is the function of the nucleus?
contains chromatin, which is made from protein and DNA (DNA controls the cell's activities. the pores allow substances to move between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. the nucleolus makes ribosomes.
12 of 14
what is the function of ribosomes?
the site where proteins are made
13 of 14
what is the function of lysosomes?
contains digestive enzymes, which are kept seperate from the cytoplasm by its membrane and can be used to digest invading cells or to brake down worn out components of the cell
