Eukaryotic Cells and Organelles

?
What is a Plasma Cell Surface Membrane?
The membrane found on the surface of animal cells and just inside the cell wall of plant cells and prokaryotic cells. It's made mainly of lipids and proteins.
1 of 14
What is the function of a Plasma Cell Surface Membrane?
It regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell. It has receptor molecules which allows it to respond to chemicals.
2 of 14
What is a Cell Wall?
A rigid structure that surrounds plant cells, mainly made of cellulose.
3 of 14
What is the function of a Cell Wall?
It supports plant cells.
4 of 14
What is a Nucleus?
A large organelle containing chromatin, which is made from DNA and proteins, and a nucleolus.
5 of 14
What is the function of a Nucleus?
It controls the cell's activities. DNA contains instructions to make proteins. The nucleolus makes ribosomes.
6 of 14
What is a Lysosome?
A round organelle surrounded by a membrane, with no clear internal structure.
7 of 14
What is the function of a Lysosome?
Contains digestive enzymes that are kept separate from the cytoplasm by the surrounding membrane, and can be used to digest invading cells or to break down worn out components of the cell.
8 of 14
What is a Ribosome?
A very small organelle that either floats free in the cytoplasm or is attached to the RER. It's made up of proteins and RNA. It's not surrounded by a membrane.
9 of 14
What is the function of a Ribosome?
The site where proteins are made.
10 of 14
What is a RER?
A system of membranes enclosing a fluid-filled space. The surface is covered with ribosomes.
11 of 14
What is the function of a RER?
Folds and processes proteins that have been made at the ribosomes.
12 of 14
What is a SER?
Similar to RER but with no ribosomes.
13 of 14
What is the function of a SER?
Synthesises and processes lipids.
