What is Kantian ethics?
Absolutist+deontological=only 1 correct answer to every diallema, no act is intrinsically good or bad, he wanted to establish a system not based on desires but practical reasons

Freedom=we have autonomy of the will, God= good behaviour is rewarded, Immorality= we recieve the reward in another life

The godness of an act derives from the intention not the act, only thing intrinsically good is good wil, good wills only motive is to act out of duty not self interest

They are not moral, they give instruction as to what should be done in order to achieve something else

a command that must always be followed by everyone, test of universibility= could it become a law of natur, always treat people as an end in themselves, we should act as if we are making rules for everyone

Nature= universalising an act would be contradictory, Will= universalising an act would lead to an undesirable would to live in

tried to resolve clash of duties by arguing that exceptions must be made, there could be possible exceptions to every rule, stresses personal character of duty which must be considered in moral situations

What are the strengths of Kantian ethics?
avoids selfishness, promotes concern, doesnt rely on consequences, clear rules, prevents people being used, values good will, form rules for everyone, methodical process, respects every person, doesnt value them in terms of usefullness to society

What are the weaknesses of Kantian Ethics?
focus on motives could lead to questionable outcomes, duties can clash, not everyones reason might reach same conclusions, ignores special responsability, doesnt consider circumstance, enjoying fufilling duty should not detract from moral worth
