Ethanol

?
What are the 2 ways that ethanol can be produced?
Fermentation and Hydration.
1 of 8
Describe and explain how ethanol is made by fermentation
Glucose (sugar) from plants is fermented. Enzymes in yeast break down the sugar into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
2 of 8
Describe and explain how ethanol is made by hydration
Ethene is made when crude oil is cracked. Ethene reacts with steam in the presence of a catalyst to create ethanol.
3 of 8
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a reaction without being used up in the reaction.
4 of 8
Advantages of making ethanol by fermentation
Sugar plants are renewable.
5 of 8
Disadvantages of making ethanol by fermentation
Fermentation is a batch process which takes a lot longer, carbon dioxide is released.
6 of 8
Advantages of making ethanol by hydration
Hydration is a continuous process therefore much faster, no carbon dioxide released.
7 of 8
Disadvantages of making ethanol by hydration
Ethene is made from crude oil which is non-renewable.
